6 Must Do House Updates Before You Sell

If you’re getting ready to sell your house, it’s likely you don’t want to spend too much time or money making changes. After all, you will be moving out soon, right?

But it’s not that straightforward.

If you want to sell your home fast, you need to make it desirable to the potential buyers coming to take a look.

Making a few updates can not only increase the value of your property but can also mean it will be on the market for less time. And houses that take longer to sell are less likely to go for the asking price.

Here are six updates to consider before you put your house on the market:

1. Give your house a fresh coat of paint

If it’s been a while since you dusted off the paintbrushes (or even if it hasn’t) — now is the time.

Take a walk around your house and make a note of any areas your paintwork is looking past its best. Pay particular attention to the woodwork, baseboards, and ceilings, which are often neglected.

If you have opted for elaborate wallpaper in any rooms, consider toning it down with some neutral paint instead. Whilst it’s good to showcase your personality in your own home, it’s not always helpful if you want to sell it.

Make sure your home is looking crisp and cared for with an updated paint job.

2. Create an Outdoor Living Space

A house sale is emotive. People buy based on their hopes and dreams. This means, when they look around your house, they’ll be trying to imagine what it would be like for their family to live there.

For many, the outside space is an integral part of family life. Spend some time making it look pretty — or hire someone to do it for you. Make sure you showcase its best features to potential buyers.

3. Focus on the kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of any family home.

This might be a cliche, but it’s true. It’s where we come together at the end of each day, to share a meal and talk about how our day went.

Prioritize your kitchen when making your upgrades. If you have outdated appliances, try your best to update them if you feel it would hinder any potential sale.

4. Refresh the carpets

How old are the carpets in your house?

If they’re looking old and worn, replace them. An inexpensive new carpet will look better than an expensive carpet that’s starting to look threadbare in areas of high footfall.

If your carpets aren’t looking too bad, consider getting a deep clean. They might not seem particularly dirty to you, but removing any dirt can make more difference than you realize.

5. KonMari the clutter

A house free from clutter sparks joy.

If you’re not there yet, you’re not alone. But you should make a considerable effort to rid your house of clutter before it goes up for sale.

A large amount of clutter detracts from all the wonderful features of your home. If you leave this as it is, potential viewers’ eyes will naturally be drawn to the mess — rather than everything else your home has to offer them.

6. Finish any odd jobs

Unless someone is buying your house as a renovation project, don’t let them get put off by any tasks that remain unfinished.

Fix that door handle.
Grease the garage door
Tighten the banister.
In short, do whatever you can to ensure your house appeals to anyone who looks around it. Take some time to think about the objections people may have — or the barriers to a sale — and eliminate them.

It might seem counterintuitive to spend money and effort on a home you are selling, but if you do these 6 tips the house will sell for more and faster. If you are thinking of selling, call us today!
